- A Maritime Academy is a four year state school that specializes in training students for various positions in the maritime industry.
- These schools combine a regimental system with a “normal university” and practical seagoing experience on both dedicated training and commercial sea going vessels.
- This system gives the cadets hands-on experience and allows cadets to graduate with both a bachelors degree in their field of study and a USCG license as either a Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer
- Due to the unique nature of their graduates, employment rates are usually at or near 100% at some of these schools.
There are five state maritime Academies located throughout the USA:
- Texas A&M Galveston Maritime Academy
- State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College
- Massachusetts Maritime Academy
- Maine Maritime Academy
- California State University Maritime Academy
